Updates 02/01/02 - New strategy for the Home Run Contest 01/29/02 - Started the Ice Climbers FAQ ****************************************************************************************** Section II. Introduction Ice Climber is an old school Nintendo game, released in 1984 for the arcades, and in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. You guide your Ice Climber (Popo) to the top of the mountain, breaking platforms, jumping on clouds, and pounding mad Topis and Polar Bears to reach the top of the mountain, where you collect eggplants, carrots, and other vegetables that only God knows why they are there in the first place! Two players can play simultaneously with Player 1 controlling Popo, and Player 2 controlling Nana. Popo's in blue, and Nana's in pink. Together they make up the Ice Climbers, one of Super Smash Bros. Melee's very unique characters, in the sense that they are literally two characters in one! You control either Popo, or Nana, depending on whose parka is the darker color, and the computer controls the other one. For the most part, the computer controlled player will follow the human controlled player, unless they are separated. ****************************************************************************************** Section III. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly The Good -------- - Both Popo and Nana can hold an item! Two items held for one character! - Their smash attacks are one of the strongest in the game, because both Popo & Nana connect with the opponent to do damage - Belay is one of the best 3rd jumps in the game, making it a very dependable vertical recovery move - Ice Shot & Blizzard can temporarily freeze opponents. The more damage they have, the longer they are frozen - They have the best footing in the game, meaning they won't slip on ice, oil slicks, or UFOs - If the primary (human controlled) Ice Climber is held, you can control the computer controlled one temporarily. The Bad ------- - Without your partner, you are pretty much a sitting duck. Your lone Ice Climber won't do as much damage as they normally can when they are together - They are rather light characters, making them relatively easy to knock off the platform - If your partner is gone, Belay will hardly take you anywhere. It will hardly boost you the height of the hammers they wield. You would have to use Squall Hammer as your 3rd jump, which has no vertical lift, is good only for a short horizontal distance, and you can't grab ledges after using Squall Hammer - Their basic B-button moves in general aren't all that great. You're better off using A-button attacks with these guys The Ugly -------- - Icicle Mountain, their home stage. The vertical scrolling is more of a distraction than your opponents. This stage is not one that beginners should play in. ****************************************************************************************** Section IV. Basic Moves A button - Pound A button (2nd) - Upswing A (dashing) - Scoop Left or Right A - Hammer Swing Up A - Hammer Spin Down A - Shin Attack Smash Left or Right + A - Ice Hammer Smash Up A - Icicle Crasher Smash Down A - Hammer Sweep A button (aerial) - Icy Whirlwind Forward A (aerial) - Hammer Slam Backward A (aerial) - Reverse Swing Up A (aerial) - Hammer Reach Down A (aerial) - Hammer Ride Z (or R + A) - Grab A (or Z) (while holding) - Cold Headbutt Forward (while holding) - Hockey Slapshot Backward (while holding) - Snow Mt. Throw Up (while holding) - Icicle Toss Down (while holding) - Avalance Crusher ****************************************************************************************** Section V. Special Moves B Button - Ice Shot Both Popo and Nana create little icicles, which slide along until they melt, or make contact with an opponent. You may even be fortunate enough to freeze someone temporarily Smash B - Squall Hammer Popo and Nana join together and swirl around like a tornado, with their hammers hitting anyone who makes contact with it. If you only have one Ice Climber, use this as your 3rd jump Up B - Belay Teamwork is the key here, as Popo and Nana swing each other upwards, and if they make contact with an opponent, the opponent gets damaged. Use this as your third jump if both Ice Climbers are present Down B - Blizzard Popo and Nana face opposite directions, and blow a chilling blast of ice at anyone who is in this attack's short range. ****************************************************************************************** Section VI. Classic Mode Stage 1: Normal Melee - The Ice Climbers battle opponents one-on-one in their respective home stage. Stage 2: Team Melee- The Ice Climbers and a computer controlled partner battle two computercontrolled opponents. Stage 3: Bonus Stage: Break the Targets! - Break 10 targets in 2 minutes, using your primary Ice Climber's regular and special attacks. Stage 4: Normal Melee - Same as Stage 1, but your opponent is a little harder Stage 5: Giant Melee - The Ice Climbers and 2 other normal sized computer controlled characters battle against one giant-sized opponent. Stage 6: Bonus Stage - Snag the Trophies - 3 trophies fall down from the sky, and you have to hit them to land in the funnel-like container in the middle of the stage. Any trophy that lands inside the funnel will be yours in the gallery. Stage 7: Normal Melee - Same as Stage 4, but your opponent is a little harder Stage 8: Multi-Man Melee - The Ice Climbers battle 10 opponents (three at a time) in their home stage. The opponents are weak and relatively easy to knock off the stage. Stage 9: Bonus Stage - Race to the Finish - The Ice Climbers races through a giant disaster filled stage and try to get to a door at the end of the stage. If you feel you cannot make the end door, you can enter several other doors along the way, but you won't be rewarded as much if you enter one of the earlier doors. My suggestion for the Ice Climbers to get to the final door is to not bother waiting for your partner. Just continue on without her/him, and when you get to the point where you choose one of three paths, choose the middle path. Use Squall Hammer to go past the great horizontal distances in this path. Stage 10: Metal Melee - You battle against a metallic version of an opponent in the Battlefield Stage. They are slow, but hit harder than their normal counterparts. Stage 11: Master Hand - You battle Master Hand on the Final Destination Stage, and depending on the difficulty, he will have a different set number of HP. If you are playing on Normal mode or harder, and you complete the first 10 stages in 15 minutes or under, Crazy Hand joins in the battle, after you wear down Master Hand to half his HP. ****************************************************************************************** Section VII. Adventure Mode Stage 1: Mushroom Kingdom - Battle Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Koopa Paratroopas in a Super Mario Bros. like stage. If you defeat a random enemy, you will be rewarded with a trophy, and you can also pick one up along the way. In the middle of the stage, you will battle 10 Yoshis, and you can't advance until you defeat all 10. My suggestion is to let the Yoshis fall down to you, and use your Smash Up attack. At the end of the level, you will have to fight Peach and Mario (or Peach and Luigi if your finishing time in the stage is xx:x2:xx). Try to stay in the center of the stage, and swat them away with your smash attacks. Stage 2.1: Kongo Jungle - You battle two miniature Donkey Kongs in the Kongo Jungle stage. They are rather light, so they can be knocked off the stage easily. Keep using your smash attacks to get rid of them. Stage 2.2: Jungle Japes - This time, you face off against a Giant Donkey Kong. This one may or may not be easier than the miniature Donkey Kongs, depending on how stupid the giant DK is. If you get close to the left or right of the main platform, and toss them towards the water, Giant DK may not be able to recover, resulting in a fast (and really cheap) victory. Stage 3: Temple - You go through a Temple a la Legend of Zelda, with Re-Deads, Ocktorocks, and Like Likes littering the path. Your goal is to find the room with the Triforce in the middle, but if you land in the room with the Master Sword in it you will battle Link. There are 5 rooms with Link in it, and you have to battle them to advance. When you find the Triforce, you will be transported to the Temple stage, where you battle Zelda/Sheik. Because she's light, she can be easy to knock off stage. Stage 4: Brinstar - Its you versus Samus in the Brinstar stage in a one-on-one battle. When you defeat her, you will now have to escape from planet Brinstar. You have 40 seconds to escape, or else the planet will blow up, and so will you (you will lose a life). Stage 5.1: Green Greens - You battle Kirby one-on-one in the Green Greens stage. Because of his very light weight, he can be knocked off very easily. Stage 5.2: Green Greens - Now you battle 15 Kirbys, each of them with a special characters ability, such as Ness Kirby or Zelda Kirby. If you beat all 15 of them in 30 seconds, you will battle a Giant Kirby. He is obviously heavier and stronger than a normal-sized one, but he can be stupid. If you are over the breakable blocks, Giant Kirby may use his Stone attack, and fall down into the pit. Stage 6.1: Corneria - The first battle will pit you against Fox. He isn't an agressive fighter (even in V. Hard Mode). He will wait for you to go to him. He is also relatively light, so he can be knocked off the stage. Stage 6.2: Corneria - After a brief sequence, you will be back on Corneria, to battle either Fox, or Falco (randomly). This time, your opponent will be more agressive than Fox was in the first part of this Stage. Not only that, but the Arwings will firing at you, damaging you and Fox/Falco as well. Try to avoid the shots they fire at you, by rolling away, and hopefully, Fox/Falco will walk into it. Knock them off the stage when they are damaged enough. Stage 7: Pokémon Stadium - You battle 15 Pokémon (mostly Pikachu, but Jigglypuff and Pichu also make an appearance), with only Poké Balls as the only items that appear on the stage. Try to rush to a Poké Ball and toss it when you get the chance. You may want the powerhouse Pokémon to appear (Snorlax, Articuno, Moltres, Scizor, Porygon2), but you may not be so lucky all the time. Just use smash attacks to get rid of them when their damage is high enough, but they are light enough so that they can be knocked off the screen rather easily. Stage 8: Big Blue - Its the Ice Climbers vs. the F-Zero racers in the Big Blue. As soon as the announcer says "Go", dash as far as you can. The Ice Climbers can move fast enough so that you can drop down the little drop in the stage, and the racers fly above you. Advance forward and dash until you pass 2 platforms. The Ice Climbers are fast enough so that you can make it on the 3rd floating platform. As soon as the racers pass by, jump on the floating platforms (there is a bottomless pit below). Keep jumping on the platforms. The racers will pass above you, so you can safely land on the track and keep dashing until you reach the Finish Line. When you reach the finish line, you will be transported to the Mute City track, where you battle Captain Falcon. Just beat him down and knock him off stage. Stage 9: Onett - You battle 3 Nesses in the Onett stage. The only items that appear are Mr. Saturns. Just beat them down with damage, and just try to avoid the cars that pass by. Try to smash the Nesses off stage when their damage is high enough. Stage 10: Icicle Mountain - You will be jumping up the stage most of the time, trying to avoid Topis and Polar Bears. There are a lot of Mr. Freezies in the level, so pick one up if you want. After a while, the stage will scroll up really fast. The stage will slow down, and you will battle against two sets of Ice Climbers. Just beat them down and knock them off when their damage is high enough. ****************************************************************************************** Section VIII. Event Mode (complete later) ****************************************************************************************** Section IX. Home Run Contest Roll backwards to grab the bat, then roll back forward and do an Ice Shot (B attack). You should do around 25% damage, and not send the bag flying. Follow it up with a Hammer Spin (Up + A attack). When the bag is in the air, jump up and hit it down with a Hammer Slam (Aerial Forward B), which should slam the bag down. Hit the bag with another Ice Shot, followed by another Hammer Spin, which should send the bag in the air. At this point, you should set up to hit it. Hopefully, both Ice Climbers connect with the hit, doing more damage, and sending the bag further. Unfortunately, the Ice Climber without the bat may get the last hit in, sending the bag only a few hundred feet. Just time your hits right, or time it such that your secondary Ice Climber grabs the bat and gets the final hit in. My record is 16xx.x ft ****************************************************************************************** Section X. Break the Targets Target 1 : Break the 1st target with an Ice Shot (B Button) while in the air, so that you don't break the platform below you. Target 2 : Jump to the platform and use your Squall Hammer (Smash B) to hit the 2nd target. Target 3 : Use another Squall Hammer to break the 3rd target. Target 4 : Use the cloud to boost yourself up then land on the platform and hit it. Target 5 : Double-jump and hit the platform to the right and above you. Target 6 : With the help of the cloud, hit the target above and to the left. Target 7 : Try to hit the target below by bouncing an Ice Shot off the wall so that it hits the target below. Target 8 : Use the cloud to help you get back up and hit the target that is in the upper left corner. Target 9 : Use an Ice Shot to hit the target that is below you and to the right. Target 10 : Jump up and locate the bird, which is holding the final target, and hit it. My record is 26.85 sec. ****************************************************************************************** Section XI. Legal Stuff & Credits I don't own the Ice Climbers, Super Smash Bros. Melee, or Earthbound. The only thing that I can claim is this Ice Climbers FAQ. Super Smash Bros. Melee belongs to Nintendo & Hal Labs. Ice Climber belongs to Nintendo.
